The recovery position should only be conducted once the Top to Toe has been completed and injuries have been treated.
In some case the airway may be vulnerable for example the child may vomit while drifting in and out of unconsciousness, in this event rolling the child into the recovery position is the best option.
The overall aim of the recovery position is to keep the airway open and free from the tongue and bodily fluids.
Lift the child's hand closest to you and let it drop lightly and naturally beside their head. Do not force the hand down as this may cause injury.
Life the hand furthest away from you and place the back of the child's hand against their cheek, you should be able to place the palm of your hand against the child's palm, this creates support for the child's face.
Pick up the child's leg, furthest away from you, with your hand under the knee, the foot should remain flat on the floor, bring legs closer this allows easy rolling of the child, your hand should remain on the child knee to prevent it from dropping.
With one hand on the knee and one hand supporting the child's face, apply light pressure on the knee forcing the child to roll towards you.
It is IMPORTANT to reopen the child's airway tilt the child's head back this will lift the tongue from the back of the throat, tilt the mouth forward to allow bodily fluids to escape. KEEP AIRWAYS CLEAR.
Its very IMPORTANT that while the child is in the recovery position that breathing is constantly checked.
However should you be on your own now is the time to call 999, once you return keep checking the child's breathing
The baby should not be left on its own and can be carried to the phone or the ambulance. In some cases the baby may be carried for some distance or up and down stairs.
The important factors are to ensure you have a firm grip of the baby and that the head remains lower than the rest of the babies body.
By tilting the head lower this will prevent the tongue from falling to the back of the babies throat. This will also allow bodily fluids to drain away.
