Reliever Medication-Easy way to remember
Asthma Attack-Blue will do

Asthma Medication

In most cases, a child will have prevention measures in place to prevent the Asthma attack, as mentioned previously prevent the trigger from causing the attack. The second line of defence is the use of preventive medications.

These medications tend to come in the form of an inhaler; however, they will NOT BE BLUE.

These inhalers are called PREVENTERS.  The preventer inhaler will be different colours, shapes and may be complicated to use.

As school and nursery staff ensure that all staff know how to use the medication, especially the Blue Reliever, if need be, ask parents/ guardians to have the applicator changed.

Manage the Asthma Attack

Step 1

Step 1

Stay Calm and talk to the child, encourage them to sit up, as this assists in breathing.

SHOUT HELP!

Step 2

Step 1

Get a reliever inhaler,

remember it's blue. Give the child the recommended dose  as stated on the care plan

Step 3 (Medication not working)

Step 3 (Medication not working)

Call 999, inform them the child is having a severe Asthma attack and the medication is having no effect.

Be prepared for the child to go unconscious and stop breathing.

Step 4 (Medication works)

Step 3 (Medication not working)

Record the time and complete the report child may need to seek medical attention if the attack was unusual and did not comply with the care plan.

The Spacer

The Nebuliser

The spacer is a wonderful tool that can be used to assist the child and the first aider in the administration of the reliever (Blue Inhaler).

The function of the spacer is to control the pressure that is applied as the medication leaves the inhaler . Many asthmatics, cs while having their attacks, struggle to breathe as it is. The spacer allows the intake of the medication and assists in the recovery of the child.

The Nebuliser

The Nebuliser

The nebuliser is another piece of equipment which may be used to provide medication to a child who suffers from breathing conditions and Asthma as a part of the care plan. The procedures could be the immediate use of a mobile nebuliser.

Should the school or nursery have a child who requires the nebuliser, ensure that full training is attended and that the use of the equipment is fully understood.
